Jake works in Google Chrome’s developer relations team, working on specs, testing implementations, and ensuring developers have tools to make their jobs less painful. He’s a big fan of time-to-render
optimisations, progressive enhancement, and all of that responsive stuff.
Prior to Google, Jake worked at Lanyrd on their mobile website, and for the BBC working on JavaScript libraries and standards. Outside of the web, he likes the taste of beer, watches Formula One, and likes taking photos of things. He has ambitions to be a fashion designer.
Sara is a freelance front-end web developer from Lebanon — focusing on HTML5, SVG, CSS3 and JavaScript. She loves writing and teaching and has combined both into writing articles and tutorials about front-end web development on her blog. She's a writer for various online magazines and for Codrops, where she is also an author and team member.
Yiying Lu award-winning artist and designer. Born in Shanghai China, Educated in Sydney Australia & London UK, now based in San Francisco Silicon Valley, Yiying Lu currently is the Creative Director at 500 Startups, the world's most active venture capital firm and startup accelerator. Yiying was named a "Top 10 Emerging Leader in Innovation" in the Microsoft Next 100 series.
Her projects have been featured in many publications, including The New York Times, Forbes, The Atlantic, NBC News, TIME, Wired Magazine, and so on. Her client list includes Disney, PepsiCo, Microsoft, Twitter, Sony, Expedia, and so on. Her notable projects include Disney Shanghai Recruitment Campaign, the official Dumpling Emoji, the Twitter Fail Whale, Conan O'Brien's Pale Whale, and the SXSW Interactive Big Bag Art.
Yiying has taught typography and magazine design at the University of Technology Sydney, and also a guest lecturer at the Program of Creativity and Innovation at New York University, Shanghai. She currently works with startup companies and corporate organizations in Silicon Valley and around the world to improve their branding and design, in order to increase their user acquisition and market growth.
Umar is a front-end web developer at Springer Nature based in London, with a focus on writing tips, tutorials and documentation for the web platform. One of the projects he plans to explore and share with the community is using tooling such as the Chrome DevTools for an improved development workflow, but also for debugging performance issues.
Patrick is a Web Performance Engineer at Fastly where - amongst other things - he is helping to build a faster web for all. Prior to Fastly, he helped architect some of the worlds largest media websites including The Guardian and The Financial Times. When not speaking or ranting about performance he enjoys spending his spare time discovering new food and craft beer.
Yuko Shimizu is an award-winning Japanese illustrator based in New York. Her work has appeared on the pages of the New York Times, TIME, and Newsweek, on the covers of DC Comics, Penguin, Abrams and Random House books, on the Gap and Nike T-shirts, and on Pepsi cans.
A Wild Swan, her collaboration with Pulitzer-winning author Michael Cunningham, came out in 2015. She was chosen as Newsweek Japan’s "100 Japanese People World Respects" in 2009.
Eric Reiss has held a wide range of eclectic jobs: piano player (in a house of ill-repute), senior copywriter (in an ad-house of ill-repute), piano repairman, adventure-game creator, and stage director. His experiences have served him admirably as an information architect, although he can’t explain exactly how.
Eric has been actively and successfully involved in service-design projects since 1985. He was part of the team that made Scandinavian Airlines “Airline of the Year” in 1985. And a few years later, he worked with British Airways to accomplished the same thing following their privatization. Later, his service design techniques were used to train over 3500 civil servants throughout the European Community.)
In more mundane lives, Eric has been a two-term president of the Information Architecture Institute and Professor of Usability and Design at IE Business School in Madrid, Spain. Today, Eric is CEO of the FatDUX Group in Copenhagen, Denmark, a leading UX company with offices and associates in over a dozen cities worldwide. He also has several books to his credit.
Eric is a Developer Advocate at Cloudinary, where he works to build a better toolset for managing images on the web. He’s also a card-carrying and tee-shirt-wearing member of the Responsive Issues Community Group – a rag-tag band of everyday developers who worked with standards bodies and browser vendors to upgrade the <img> element for the responsive web. He loves learning through teaching and building and lives on an island in Puget Sound.
Joe is the author of the book Psychology of Designers. A recovering neuroscientist, then a spell as a elementary school teacher, Joe started his UX career 12 years ago. He has worked with organisations like Disney, eBay, Glenfiddich and Marriott.
Lyza Danger Gardner is a developer and human, co-founder of Cloud Four and Open Web Engineer at Bocoup. A 20-year veteran of the web, she is a generalist with an abiding commitment to making the web work everywhere. Lyza is a seasoned and spirited speaker, and is a writer for A List Apart, O’Reilly Publishing, net Magazine, Smashing Magazine and others.
Brad Frost is a web designer, speaker, writer, and consultant located in beautiful Pittsburgh, PA. He is the author of the book Atomic Design, which introduces a methodology to create and maintain effective design systems. In addition to co-hosting the Style Guides Podcast, he has also helped create several tools and resources for web designers, including Pattern Lab, Styleguides.io, Style Guide Guide, This Is Responsive, and WTF Mobile Web.
A visionary, Horace is one of the world’s most respected business analysts and renowned experts on complex data analysis. He is the founder and author of the market intelligence site Asymco.com, and also works as an independent analyst and advisor to telecom incumbents and entrants on mobile platform strategy. An authority on and enthusiast of Apple’s business, Dediu also spent more than eight years analyzing mobile software, platforms and markets at Nokia.
Kate Dawkins is a designer, creative director and founder of Kate Dawkins Studio. A studio that specialises in designing and delivering bespoke content for live performances, shows and brand events.
Kate has over 25 years of experience in designing and delivering distinctive visual content for some of the largest global brands, from the giant 360° ‘Audience pixels’ for the London 2012 Olympic Ceremonies, to Adidas, Samsung, Jaguar Land Rover, Elton John and the MTV Music Awards.
Nathan Curtis has been swimming in the deep end of the UX pool since 1996, when he started focusing his creative energies on IA, ID, usability, and front-end development. Nathan authored Modular Web Design and has presented and led daylong workshops for years on the topics of design systems, component and pattern libraries, sketching, and design communications.
He’s also an entrepreneur at heart, having founded EightShapes, a UX design agency headquartered in Washington, DC.
